2009 St. Ignatius Boys' Lacrosse

The Saint Ignatius Varsity, JV and Freshmen lacrosse teams, coaches, player's families and friends scored a big win for the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (Pan Can) on Saturday, May 2, 2009 in Chicago's Lincoln Park at the PurpleStride Chicago 5K Walk and Benefit.
The Wolfpack Lacrosse and Friends team comprised of nearly one hundred members, finished third among 172 fundraising teams. Wolfpack Treasurer and Parent Board Member Marti Kopczyk organized the Wolfpack Lacrosse and Friends team in honor of fellow Board Member Chuck Saponaro, his wife, Jill, and sons, Varsity team co-captain, Storm, and Freshmen team member, Jett.
The Pan Can fundraising team raised $9,970 for the fight against pancreatic cancer. Overall, the Chicago PurpleStride event raised $269,155 to promote awareness of, and to find a cure for, pancreatic cancer. The Wolfpack team, including Saint Ignatius lacrosse players wearing their white home jerseys trimmed in maroon and gold, gathered for pictures and conversation under the Benjamin Franklin statue at the south end of Lincoln Park before and after the 5K walk.
It was ironic that the group assembled in the shadow of a famous scientific inventor whose legacy of hard work and intellectual pragmatism represent the very same attributes that the Wolfpack Lacrosse and Friends team hoped to help Pan Can achieve in their battle against pancreatic cancer. The well-attended event along with the strong levels of financial and emotional support clearly demonstrated that Wolfpack lacrosse at Saint Ignatius not only can win between the lines, but also can score big in life—and this win was a memorable one for the team! Thank you everyone.
